Deep Water Culture

Deep water culture systems are one of the simplest hydroponic systems and are thus commonly found in house holds across Australia and the world. You'll find both home growers and commercial growers using this system for two main reasons. Firstly. It's simple. Secondly. It provides excellent results. It works great in smaller set ups and with large scale grows. Like they say, KISS - keep it simple stupid. 

The way deep water culture works is very similar to all the other hydroponic systems. You have the reservoir which contains water and nutrients. The plants then hang above the reservoir with their roots inside the water. To ensure they don't drown you place air stones and air pumps within the water which provide oxygen directly to the roots via the water. To set this up it is relatively cheap as all you need are the following items:

1. Reservoir
2. Air pump / Air stone
3. Baskets to hold the plants, a platform to place the baskets in and a growing medium

 Deep water culture systems work great for 90 percent of plants as they're continuously watered and feed by the roots hanging in the water. They're also always getting oxygen via the air stone and pump which is vital for vigorous growth and high yields. An important thing to remember is to ensure you have provided a large enough air stone / pump in your reservoir as the more oxygen your plants get the better growth and yield you will see.
