When you're growing indoors and using hps and mh lights you'll typically need three separate parts including the bulb, a ballast and a reflector / hood. HPS lights and ballasts are typically used for flowering while MH bulbs and ballasts are used for growth and the vegetative cycle.
Having two separate ballasts and bulbs for both the growing and flowering cycle can become a bit expensive for the home gardener and hobby hydroponic grower. In these situations we usually recommend one of our switchable ballasts which will allow you to run both HPS and MH bulbsfrom the one ballast. From there you'll only need two separate bulbs and one ballast which will save you space and money. The switchable ballasts do cost a little more but when compared to buying two separate ballasts it does work out cheaper in the long run.
Some of our ballasts also offer the option of dimming the lights. This feature is great and we highly recommend getting a ballast with dimming capabilities. This allows growers to run the lights down low during small vegetative growth and then slowly increasing the output as the plants get bigger. By doing this it gives your plants a more life like light cycle but also saves on energy costs. Not only will you save in electricity costs from the actual ballast due to the lower light output, your environmental equipment will also run at a lower capacity which cuts back on electricity costs further.
You'll also have the option of buying a 250 watt ballast, a 400 watt ballast, a 600 watt ballast or a 1000 watt ballast. For smaller hydroponic gardens we generally recommend either the 400 or 600 watt lights. For larger grow rooms we recommend getting one or more 1000 watt lights.
Working out your coverage before buying a grow light is essential. Buying a grow light that is too small or too large for your garden will have a large impact on your growth and yields. The general output / coverage area's for hps and mh lights are:
