What is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is a crucial step in preparing edibles or tinctures to ensure the potency of cannabis when ingested orally. Raw cannabis contains almost no THC, which is the active compound that gets you high. When you smoke or vape, THCA is converted to THC due to the heating of the bud. This is why you cannot make edibles or tinctures with raw cannabis, as the decarboxylation process will not occur, wasting the majority of your weed. Decarboxylation is vital in ensuring the effectiveness of your homemade goodies. 

Why do I need a Decarb Box?

The Magical Butter Decarb Box takes the guess work out of the decarboxylation process. As oven temperatures fluctuate, the integrated thermometer allows for calibration so that your herbs can bake at the perfect heat. This means that no cannabis will go to waste from being under or overheated.

The silicone container stops the smaller parts of the herb being blown and lost in the oven – a common problem when attempting to decarboxylate without a container. The Decarb Box also holds in the odour of your cannabis, allowing your herbs to be activated subtly without stinking out the kitchen.

How to use the Magical Butter Decarb Box

Using the Magical Butter Decarb Box is a straight-forward process. See below for recommended heating temperatures and times, although most will be aiming for the T-C target. Follow these steps for great results every time:

• Calibrate the oven – place the thermometer inside your oven with the external display on the outside. Preheat your oven to the desired decarboxylation temperature, and ensure that you get an accurate reading on the thermometer’s digital display. If the reading does not match the desired temperature, you need to adjust the oven accordingly. For example, if the oven is set to 120°C but the display reads 140°C, then the oven needs to be turned down 20°C.
• Break up the herb – you do not need to grind your cannabis, however breaking up the buds by hand will allow a greater surface area for an effective decarboxylation process.
• Decarb the herb – place the cannabis inside the silicone container, ensuring the lid is firmly sealed on each side. Place the container on the centre rack of the oven and bake for the desired time. When the time is up, let the container cool completely or place in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. Your herbs are now ready to be used with the Magical Butter Machine!
• Hint: Let the herb cool completely, or chill in freezer 10-15 minutes. This step is believed to help preserve certain beneficial phytonutrients.

Target Temperature Minutes

 Please note that while higher temperatures/times help activate C-D and then C-N, each higher temp/time can also diminish the effect of a previously activated cannabinoid. Below are the activation target temperatures in minutes.  

T-C:  250°F/121°C - 30-45 minutes

C-D:  280°F/140°C - 60-90 minutes

C-N:  320°F/160°C - 90-120 minutes
