Here at The Hippie House, we’re being asked more and more frequently about Boveda Humidipaks. With their steady rise in popularity, people are wondering what they are all about and how they can be used. More importantly, where can you buy them in Australia?
If this sounds like you, then this guide has you covered. Read on for everything you need to know about Boveda and how to buy their products in Australia.
Who are Boveda?
From humble beginnings in 1997, Boveda are now considered the world leaders in two-way humidity control. Their flagship product is the Boveda Humidipak, originally developed to protect fine quality cigars, though now used in a range of applications around the world.
There are a number of ways Boveda Humidipaks can be used. Here are just a few examples:
Wood and woodwind instruments
In a nutshell, you can use Boveda Humidipaks to keep pretty much any herbs or botanicals fresh, preventing them from mould and staleness while also enhancing flavours!
How do they work?
Boveda Humidipaks work on a principle of relative humidity (RH), which is a measure of an environment’s water vapour content. Usually expressed as a percentage, this is the number printed on the front of each pack. By mixing certain salts with water, Boveda Humidipaks react to their environment, adding or absorbing moisture to keep a precise relative humidity.
When choosing your Humidipak, it’s important to understand the required relative humidity for what you are storing. For example, cigars should be stored with around 65%-72% relative humidity, while the optimal range for tobacco is between 60%-70%.
How do you use Boveda Humidipaks?
Once you’ve selected the correct relative humidity for your needs, utilising the Humidipaks is a breeze. Whether you’ve got a humidor, glass jar or storage container, the basic principles remain the same. Here’s what you need to do:
Place the Boveda Humidipak in storage device.Humidipaks come in a range of sizes to fit any container.
Seal the container/close the lid.You can’t use too much Boveda, so don’t worry about the Humidipak being too large or putting too many in.
Delight in the freshness! Your products are now safely protected from drying out or becoming too moist.

Hugely popular among cigar smokers, these 67g satchels keep optimal humidity levels for up to 450g each.
While Boveda’s two-way humidity control system is basically foolproof, there a few tips and tricks to getting the most out of your Humidipaks:
Replacing your Humidipaks: you’ll know it’s time for a fresh Humidipak when your old one starts to develop hard spots. Simply swap it out for a new one and away you go! Don’t wait until it goes rock hard or it might be too late for your goodies.
Using more than one Humidipak: you won’t do any harm by using more than the recommended amount of Humidipaks at once. In fact, the Humidipaks will last longer the more you put in the container. If you want to get more out of Boveda, try adding a few extra packs to your storage device.
Don’t work your Humidipaks too hard: if your Humidipaks are only lasting two months or less, there is too much air exposure within your container. Either use a more tightly secured container or add in a few more Humidipaks.
